Kossmann was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1909 and earned his BS degree from New York University in 1928. He was also awarded the MD degree in 1931 and the Med. Sc.D. degree in 1938 from New York University , with which he was almost continuously associated for 43 years. Leaving his native city only briefly in 1934 (and for the following six summers) to work in electrocardiography with the great Frank N. Wilson at the University of Michigan, Dr. Kossmann became one of the nations foremost electrocardiographers. He developed biomedical engineering as a major research component of the outstanding training program in cardiology that he headed at the New York University-Bellevue Medical Center for many years. His pioneering electrophysiology research, combined with broad clinical acumen in internal medicine, made him one of the nations foremost educators in his subspecialty. From 1941 to 1946, he served at the United States Air Force School of Aviation Medicine where he pioneered medical studies of people in flight and authored the Flight Surgeons Handbook. He served as the director of the Department of Aviation Medicine and of the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation of the Air Force School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field. For his wartime service in helping to train more than 4000 flight surgeons, he was awarded the Legion of Merit. Dr. Kossmann was long active in aviation medicine and held the rank of Colonel, USAF (MC) honorary reserve. He also served as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board to the Chief of Staff, USAF. Dr. Kossmanns career encompassed directing seven NIH training programs, membership on the Subspecialty Board of Cardiovascular Diseases of the American Board of Internal Medicine, chairmanship of the National Heart Institutes Training Grants and Awards Committee, presidency of the New York Heart Association, and service on many committees of the American Heart Association. Under his chairmanship, the sixth edition of The Nomenclature and Criteria for Diagnosis of Diseases of the Heart was published by the New York Heart Association and served as a model of precise diagnosis. He also served on the editorial boards of most of the leading cardiology journals in the United States. In 1967, Dr. Kossmann left New York University to establish a cardiovascular program in the UT Memphis College of Medicine. He assumed his new duties as professor and chief of the Division of Cardiovascular and Circulatory Diseases on January 1, 1968. The division is part of the College of Medicines Department of Medicine, which was then chaired by Dr. Gene Stollerman. In 1971, the National Institutes of Health approved a grant of $1.98 million for the University of Tennessee to establish in Memphis a specialized center for research into the causes of high blood pressure. The project concentrated on malignant hypertension. The center was based in the Division of Cardiovascular and Circulatory Diseases, headed by Dr. Kossmann. Dr. Kossmann continued to teach, even after reaching Emeritis status in 1977. He was recognized and revered as a scholar and a gentleman throughout the University of Tennessee, Memphis. One of this countrys outstanding teachers and clinicians, Dr. Kossmann combined an unusually broad grasp of internal medicine with an in-depth study of electrophysiology and cardiovascular disease. He linked clinical skills with the burgeoning technology of biomedical engineering to investigate, diagnose, and treat diseases of the circulatory system. He taught, trained, and inspired a host of students of medicine. He was honored as Master of the American College of Physicians at a convocation ceremony in 1982 in Philadelphia. Dr. Kossmann was the first physician from Memphis ever to achieve this prestigious rank. This collection was donated to the library in 1994.
