Acceptable Computer Usage Policy

UTHSC library computer use is restricted to UT faculty, students, and staff,
and access may be granted to visitors seeking health or biomedical information.
A visitor is any non-UT person.

The library currently provides computers on the main reading floor for use by
visitors searching for biomedical information. Priority for computer use is
given to UTHSC students, faculty, and staff.

Access to the Multimedia Lab is restricted at all hours for use by UT students,
faculty, and staff. Special permission may be granted for a visitor who has a
sound reason for the using the lab, but this use must be related to healthcare,
research, and biomedical information. Visitors may use the public computers
in the main reading room of the library to search for biomedical information.

Access to the E-Classroom is restricted during evening and weekend hours to UT
faculty, staff, and students, except by special permission (Circulation Desk).

Permission to access the Multimedia Lab and E-Classroom may be granted by the
Circulation Desk for valid reasons related to education, health, or biomedical
information use. The person requesting such access must show valid
identification and sign a sheet acknowledging that they have read, understand,
and agree to this policy for computer use.

Computer use is on a first-come, first-serve basis. After an hour, a visitor
may be required to log off the computer if another visitor is waiting for a
computer. If a UT student, staff, or faculty member needs to access the
computer, the visitor may be asked to relinquish it.

Students enrolled in academic programs at another institution should use that
institution’s library as their primary library. Due to limited resources,
including staff time, the UTHSC library provides very limited assistance for
non-UT students.

Noisy or disruptive visitors will be asked to leave the library.

Unacceptable Use

Visitors may not use library computers for illegal or inappropriate activities
or for activities outside the scope of health and biomedical research, including

  • Misrepresenting oneself on the Internet or engaging in fraud.
  • Viewing, downloading, or disseminating pornography.
  • Participating in chat rooms, forums, or personal email use.
  • Playing games.
  • Issuing threats.
  • Violating copyright laws or licensing agreements.
  • Hacking, altering, deleting, or damaging computer software, hardware, system network, programs, or data.
  • Removing any part of a computer.
  • Using computer printers for nonbiomedical related purposes.

Any visitors observed engaging in any of the above activities will be asked
for their identification, which will be recorded, and they may be warned or
asked to leave the library. However, if they return and the behavior is
observed again, campus police may be called, they will be asked to leave,
and they will be permanently barred from again entering the UTCHS library.
