SciFinder Scholar 2007 Software Downloads

We recommend printing these instructions before downloading the software.

In order to search Chemical Abstracts SciFinder Scholar database, you need to install SciFinder Scholar 2007 software. Previous versions of this software may continue to work, but are now longer supported by the vendor. Previous versions should not be uninstalled before installing the 2007 version.

The software only functions at on-campus computers at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine. If you are using a computer at one of these campuses, follow the steps below to properly install the software. Otherwise, visit the Health Sciences Library (Memphis) or Preston Medical Library (Knoxville) to use the software on a library computer.

Please note: When you click on the links to download the software, you will be asked for a username and password. Enter cheminfo for the username and hscvols for the password.


SciFinder Scholar 2007 for Mac OS X (10.3 or 10.4 only; 10.5 not yet supported)

  1. Check page 8 in the "Getting Started" guide (~148 KB PDF file) to make sure that your system meets the requirements.
  2. Download sfs2007.dmg. (~14.1 MB).
  3. Double-click "sfs2007.dmg" to mount the disk image. If a new window does not open, double-click on the SciFinder Scholar icon on your desktop.
  4. Drag the SciFinder Scholar application (the SciFinder Scholar icon in the white square on the right) into your Applications folder.
  5. If you did not have the 2006 version installed on your Mac, create a folder labeled 'SciFinder Scholar' under /Users/YourUsername/Library/Application Support/. Download the configuration file site.prf (32 KB) and place it in the 'SciFinder Scholar' folder you just created.
  6. Launch SciFinder Scholar by double-clicking on the SciFinder Scholar icon in your Applications folder.
  7. If you had a previous version of SciFinder Scholar installed, find the old version in your Applications folder and drag it to the trash.

SciFinder Scholar 2007 for Windows 2000 (SP3 or higher), XP (SP1 or SP2), or Vista

  1. Check page 8 in the "Getting Started" guide (~148 KB PDF file) to make sure that your system meets the requirements.
  2. Download SFS2007.exe (~12.2 MB) and site.prf (32 KB).
  3. If you have the 2006 version installed, determine the location of the existing software (do not delete it) Typically, it can be found at C:\SFSCHLR.
  4. Close all programs before beginning the installation process.
  5. Double-click on the sfs2007.exe file on your desktop to install the software.
  6. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
  7. Copy site.prf configuration file you previously downloaded and place it in the SFSCHLR folder.
  8. Test your installation by launching the SciFinder program. The program can be found at Start > Programs > SciFinder Scholar 2007 Edition > SciFinder Scholar. After agreeing to the license, you should either arrive at a search screen or receive a message that all IDs are in use. If you get either one of these, your installation is working properly. If you see a 2413 error ("missing site.prf file") be sure that you completed the instructions in step 7.
Optional: SciFinder Scholar Toolbar to Internet Explorer (version 5 or higher)

The SciFinder Scholar Toolbar for Internet Explorer allows you to quickly initiate a SciFinder search from within Internet Explorer.

  1. Download SciFinderScholarToolbar.exe (~1.8 MB).
  2. Double-click the "SciFinderScholarToolbar.exe" icon to install the toolbar.
  3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
  4. To display the SciFinder Scholar Toolbar, open Internet Explorer and select View > Toolbars > SciFinder Scholar Bar.
Optional: ViewerLite (unsupported)

ViewLite allows you to view 3D molecular models for structure results. Note that ViewerLite is no longer supported by the vendor as is provided "as is."

  1. Download ViewerLite.
  2. After downloading ViewerLite, download the ViewerLite Patch.
  3. Unzip the ViewerLite Patch file and read the "MDMReadme.txt" file for instructions.
  4. Launch the ViewerLite program (under Start >Programs) to complete the ViewerLite installation process.
